Garamba National Park
Garamba National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Africa, established in 1938. It can be found in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically in the Orientale Province. The park, covering 5200 square kilometers, earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1980 because of its diverse wildlife and rich biodiversity. African Parks, a non-profit organization, along with the Institute Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), manages the park. Garamba National Park shares its border with South Sudan.
This park is famous for its large herds of elephants and is the only place in the Congo where you can find the Kordofan giraffe. In the past, Garamba was also home to white rhinos, but extensive poaching during the Congo civil wars led to their decline. Sadly, by 2008, the last remaining white rhinos in the park were killed by poachers.
Despite the challenges faced during civil unrest, Garamba National Park remains a biodiverse haven. It features savannah grasslands, tropical rainforests, papyrus, rocky outcrops, and marshlands with scattered inselbergs. The park is adorned with the stunning Garamba Rivers, including River Dungu and River Garamba. The wildlife includes large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giant forest hogs, vervet monkeys, golden cats, and the unique Kordofan giraffes. The park boasts over 1000 tree species, with about 5% being exclusive to Garamba. Additionally, there are approximately 550 bird species, some of which are found only in Garamba National Park. Tourists visiting the park can enjoy observing these diverse and captivating natural wonders.
