TRIP OVER VIEW

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the south western Uganda in Kisoro district bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the south, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The Park makes up part of the larger Virunga conservation area that straddles three countries. It was gazzeted in 1991 and it is the smallest national park in Uganda. The park hugs three extinct Virunga volcanoes that is to say, Muhavura, Gahinga, and Mountain Sabinyo.

The park is defined by a variety of fauna and flora including the tropical slopes of the extinct volcanoes, montane woodland and forest, bamboo, and the Ericaceous zone which contains giant tree heathers.

Mgahinga gorilla national park is one of the two places in Uganda that provides a habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Local attractions in and around the park include gorilla trekking, nature walks, mountain climbing, birding and cultural excursions.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in Bufumbira county of the Kisoro district, just 15 kilometers from the small town of Kisoro. It is advisable to use a 4WD vehicle at all times especially during wet season. International travelers will fly into Entebbe international airport in Kampala, which is approximately 500 kilometers from national park and there also domestic flights available from Entebbe airport to Kisoro.

Details

You will be picked from your Kampala hotel by one of our professional driver guides to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the morning at around 6:00 am. You will go on your journey from Kampala to Masaka where you will make a stopover at the equator. During the short stop at the equator, you will be enlightened about the effect of the earth’s magnetic fields in southern and northern hemispheres, and at 0latitude (equator) where in addition to this, you will perform a simple experiment to acknowledge the magnetic phenomenon.  After that, you will continue to Mbarara town where you will have another stopover at Maple Leaf hotel for lunch. After your lunch, you will proceed to Kisoro and check in at Mondi Hotel, have refreshments, dinner overnight sleep. Meal plan(s); lunch, dinner.
Mgahinga park has one family called Nyakagezi that receives tourists on gorilla-tracking safaris every day. The Mgahinga trek is quite different from Bwindi because it is a hike that is done along a range of ancient volcanoes. For this activity, you will wake up early for breakfast and set off for gorilla trekking which is one of the main highlights here. You will have a close to 4 to 5 hours guided trek and upon finding the gorillas, you will have a full hour interaction with these wonderful primates after which you will head back to your hotel for lunch and lunchtime relaxation and wait for afternoon activity. After your lunch, you will go with an expert birder as you embark on your bird watching expedition in Mgahinga. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is an excellent birding location with at least 12 Albertine endemics including the Blue-headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Rwenzori batis, Handsome francolin, and Rwenzori Turaco. Other birds include the White-naped raven, Pin-tailed whydahs, the bronze sunbird, and the black-headed waxbill, and during this exercise, you will have the opportunity to see some of these bird species. You will spend 2 – 3 hours during this exercise and after it, you will head back to your hotel for relaxation, dinner and overnight sleep. Meal plan(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park’s skyline is dominated by 3 extinct volcanic cones that are easy to see from miles away especially on clear days when the clouds aren’t covering them. These are Mt. Muhavura or Muhabura, Mt. Gahinga and Mt. Sabyinyo all offering unique and exciting hiking experiences. For this activity, you will hike the Mount Muhavura. You will wake up in the morning for breakfast, after breakfast you prepare your hiking geer and then set off with the accompany of an experienced guide. You will have lunch and drinks along the hiking trail in the exercise that will take 8 – 10 hours of our precious time and after it, you will head back to your hotel room for refreshment, dinner and sleep. Mount Muhavura with its crater lake is the highest of the three volcanoes. Meal plan(s): Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
 Canoeing here is done at lake Mutanda, which is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain range. The lake has several islands and is drained by the Rutshuru River, which flows northward to Lake Edward. You will have an early morning breakfast and then set off for your canoeing exercise. You will enjoy the lake with an experienced captain and guide and experience the silence and beauty of Lake Mutanda and its surroundings by motorized boat or canoe. This exercise will take you 3 hours maximum and after it, you will head back to your hotel for lunch and prepare for the next activity. After your lunch time relaxation, you will head for the Batwa community visit whereby this journey down memory lane will bring you closer to the lives of ancient forest hunter-gatherers, who for thousands of years inhabited this area of the country and depended on this rich forest for their shelter, medicine, and food. The Batwa trail is a cultural experience led by Batwa guides who will take you through the park to reveal to you some of the secrets of the forest that kept them going for millennia. This tour will climax in visiting the Garama cave and then some traditional music, an invitation where you will put on your dancing shoes and join in with the celebration. After this wonderful social experience, you will head back to your hotel room for overnight activities. Meal plan(s); breakfast, lunch, supper.
 You will wake up in the morning prepare your baggage and have a mid-morning breakfast. After your breakfast, your driver will be ready, you will check out of Mondi hotel and you will be driven to Entebbe International Airport. This journey will take you about 9 to 10 hours and it will mark the end of this tour. This will be an opportunity to reflect on.
